7) Check yourself before you wreck yourself. Before you apply for any position, prepare a list of references who you think would recommend you. Don’t forget to ask for the individual’s permission to use their name. Also, prepare your references so that they are not caught off guard by your potential employer, allowing them more time to formulate their positive statements about you and resulting in an overall better recommendation.

8) Subscribe and read publications about the industry you want to professionally explore. Some examples for the tech world are: ComputerWorld, CIO Magazine, and Technology Review. It is important to stay in the know so that you are able to add insight when your potential employer asks about current and specific developments in the field. This will also make you look knowledgeable about your area, and ultimately making a better impression on your interviewer.

9) Research the company. Before you apply within a company, research the company, and understand as much as you can about who they are, their mission, and what they do. After all, you may potentially work for them and you should know what your end product will be. During your research, also consider their company culture, and if it will be a culture you would enjoy. Learn about their market, competition and any other neat facts. These tips will come in handy when you go for your interview and impress them with how much you already know about their company.
